2003 Topps parallel sets

13 09 2015

Topps again had 3 parallel sets in 2003, though it wasn’t the exact same 3 as the year before.  New were Topps Black cards, but gone were the Topps Limited factory sets.  As always, odds below are for hobby packs.

Topps Gold – 684 cards (1:16 s1, 1:10 s2 – #/2003)

Topps Gold was back for its third straight year (fifth time overall).  In 2003, Topps Gold still had a shiny gold foil border as opposed to the minimalist color changed one today.  Numbering Topps Gold to the current year is a trend Topps has kept to this day.  There were 36 cards that didn’t have gold parallels – basically the season highlights, the postseason highlights and the American League Sporting News All-Star cards.  This is a bit strange, because none of those cards are full bleed and certainly could have had gold foil added.  Plus, Topps did create Gold cards for the NL Sporting News cards

Topps Black – 684 cards (HTA Jumbo only – 1:16 s1, 1:7 s2 – #/52)

Topps started Topps Black as a much rarer parallel insert set in 2003.  Topps Black was numbered to 52, to honor 52 years of collecting since the 1952 set.

Topps went down to just 1 parallel factory set, with the Limited Edition factory sets getting scrapped in 2003.

HTA factory sets stayed around, containing a foil stamp with the “Home Team Advantage” logo.
