Topps All-Star Rookies

  • RHP – Jason Jennings
  • LHP – Damian Moss
  • C – Geronimo Gil
  • 1B – Nick Johnson
  • 2B – Mark Ellis
  • 3B – Eric Hinske
  • SS – Ramon Santiago
  • OF – Austin Kearns, Alex Sanchez, Brad Wilkerson

To say this the 2002 Topps All-Star Rookie Team (featured on 2003 Topps) is a mediocre team is a really big understatement.  After what may have been the best ASR team of all time, this is probably the worst.  Mark Ellis is the best player historically on this team, with Eric Hinske and Austin Kearns next on the list.  Not a single player is still in the game today.

Hinske and Jason Jennings were the Rookies of the Year in their respective leagues, and Jennings probably had a close battle with Rodrigo Lopez for the RHP.  If it was up to me, I’d have given it to Lopez who went 15-9 with a 3.57 ERA, which was a run lower than Jennings.  John Lackey could have been a choice there as well – he didn’t pitch as many innings as the other 2 guys, but did go 9-4 and got the victory as his team’s starter in game 7 of the World Series.  The other potential snub was at first base – Carlos Pena and Nick Johnson had nearly identical numbers.
