Saturdays Suds: Baseball & Beer #55 – Ommegang Cooperstown Ale

6 12 2014

Ommegang Cooperstown Ale 4-pack

Back in 2012 and 2013 I did a bunch of beers from the Ommegang Brewery as part of my “Baseball and Beer” series.  At one point, Ommegang beers made up over a third of my Saturday Suds posts.  This is my 12th Ommegang beer, and the 56th overall.

The idea was that, since the brewery is based in Cooperstown, I’m considering that a baseball connection.  Plus, I almost always like their beers.  None of the beers I’ve tried had any more connection than that – until this one, where the brewery does note the connection to the sport and the town on its packaging.

Ommegang Cooperstown Ale bottleBrewery:  Ommegang Brewery, Cooperstown, NY

(Now owned by the Duvel Belgian Brewery, though still operated out of Cooperstown)

Beer:  Ommegang Cooperstown Ale

Description:  Per their website (and paraphrased on the bottle):

“Baseball and beer. Few things are more ingrained in America’s psyche than baseball and beer. The histories of both are laden with traditions and transcendence. Rascals and radicals. Celebration and shared experience. Treasured summertime moments with sun on our faces and a beer in our hands. The timeless game defines our past and guides our future.

Lightly golden-straw hue with a lasting thick, white head. Aromas of sweet malt, floral with slight citrus are followed by delicate herbal notes. Faintly sweet giving way to mellow, lightly floral hop flavor and notes of banana and pears from our signature house yeast. Nicely balanced with a clean herbal-hopped finish makes this an enjoyably, quaffable ale.”

The first paragraph pretty much sums up why I do these posts!  A perfect beer for this idea!  The second paragraph does a very good job describing the taste, as well.  This is a very good ale.  It’s not super-bitter – it’s not quite a pale ale, not quite a pilsner, not quite a wheat ale.  It goes down fairly easy, while still maintaining some taste.  It kind of reminds me of Anchor Steam in that manner.  I don’t know if it’s my favorite Ommegang beer – but that’s mostly because they’ve got some real winners.  It’s very good, and fits well for a middle-of-summer type beer.

Medium:  I got a 4-pack of 12 ounce bottles.

How it’s related to baseball:  For Ommegang beers, I usually say “The beer itself isn’t really related at all”.  Not true here!  As mentioned – this is brewed to be a good summertime ale that still has some flavor.  And the bottle has baseball players on the front.  The label pays homage to 1939 – the year the Hall of Fame opened it’s doors (which was actually 3 years after players were first inducted).

The Ommegang Brewery is a Belgian-style brewery that has been around for 25 years.  But the bottom line?  It’s in Cooperstown – home of the baseball Hall of Fame.  I have twice been to Cooperstown, a few years ago on day trip with my dad, and Rickey Henderson’s induction back in 2009.
