“Lost Cards”: The Year After, 1980

5 02 2014

This is interesting because I’ve now gotten to the point where I’m doing sets from my Lifetime Topps project, so if there is a card that exists for the player in question, I probably have it!

Best Player to retire in 1979.   Lou Brock.

Did he have a 1979 card?   Sort of.

Brock retired as baseball’s all-time steals leader, and he reached 3,000 hits in his final season.  He was featured on a card #1, a Highlight card, with Carl Yastrzemski.  Yaz also reached that milestone (but didn’t retire) in 1979.  Brock didn’t get a regular card, however.

Was a “retro” card ever produced?   No – Topps hasn’t created any new cards showing Brock on a 1980 design.  Uncle Doc’s Card Closet did, though!

Apologies to:   Catfish Hunter didn’t have a 1980 Topps card, but he got a card in the 1980 portion of 2013’s Archives set.  Another inadvertent “card that never was” produced in a Topps retro product!  See that card above.
