“Lost Cards”: The Year After, 1959

1959 Topps Virgil Trucks

Best Player to retire in 1958.   Pee Wee Reese (Hall of Famer).

Did he have a 1959 card?   No

For the third straight year I’ve got one of the Dodger greats listed as the best retiring player.  Reese was the 1958 version.  His last card was from 1958 Topps.

Was a “retro” card ever produced?   No – Topps never created a Reese card from 1959.

Apologies to:   Virgil Trucks who, unlike Reese, did get a card in the 1959 set with his full stat line on the back.  Trucks had tried to sign on with a Minor League affiliate of the Orioles in 1959, so I wonder if that factored into him getting a 1959 card, as he hadn’t officially retired.  See the Trucks card above.

Bob Lemon (Hall of Famer) also retired after the 1958 season, but his last card was in 1958 Topps.
