“Lost Cards”: The Year After, 1958

13 01 2014

1958 Topps George Kell

Best Player to retire in 1957.   Roy Campanella (Hall of Famer)

Did he have a 1958 card?   No

Campy was paralyzed in a car accident in January, 1958.  Topps didn’t include a card of him for the 1958 season, but did have a tribute card in the 1959 set entitled “symbol of courage”.

Was a “retro” card ever produced?   No – Topps never created a Campy card from 1958.  Bob Lemke did so on his blog, however.

Apologies to:   George Kell (Hall of Famer) retired after the 1957 season.  He did get a card in the 1958 set, however.  This is the first player on any of my lists to have a Topps card the next year where he wasn’t the team’s manager (see above).
