Goodwin Reds Champions

5 09 2012

2012 Goodwin Champions again features cards of 2 Big Red Machine players.  Johnny Bench is back, and Tony Perez is replaced by Pete Rose.  Both players are featured in a base card:

The Rose is the worst card in the set.  It’s a combination of Rose looking super-trashy in the photo and just something that’s poorly done by the artist.

Rose has an autographed version of his card.

Since they have a base card, they also have 5 miniature parallel versions: a green mini “Lady Luck”, a green blank back mini, a silver foil mini, a red mini “Magician” parallel, and a gold mini “Presidential” parallel.  They also have 4 mini printing plates each.

There are no Reds (Champions or not) in the 1888 Goodwin set, however, 3 players ended up in Cincinnati later on in their careers.  Bob Caruthers, King Kelly and Ed Andrews all played one season in Cincinnati.  Caruthers played for the Reds in 1893, while Kelly and Andrews played for the American Association Cincinnati team called the “Kelly’s Killers” in 1891.

You sure are right about that Rose, one of the worst art cards I have seen. I kinda like the golfing Bench.
