1993 Topps cards – Big Red Machine

11 12 2011

The 1993 Topps set had two guys, the same as the year before – though one of them was a different Big Red Machine member.  Ken Griffey Sr. had his last card in 1992 Topps (he had one card in 1993 – there was a special card with Sr. and Jr. in Bowman), but Tony Perez was featured in the Topps set for his brief stint as a Reds Manager.  Sparky Anderson was still around as the manager of the Tigers.  So 1993 was the point where there are no more player cards of the Big Red Machine, just cards depicting them as a manager.

This was also Sparky’s last card, and as Perez got fired about a month into the season – this was the last year for quite a while that anyone from the Big Red Machine had a card in the base Topps set.  1994 would be the first year since 1962 that there were no members of the Big Red Machine in the set.
