1993 Topps Pre-Production

10 12 2011

Topps again came out with a couple sets of promos to preview the design of its 1993 set to collectors.  First, there were 9 cards included in specially marked Topps factory sets.  These cards are identical to the base cards – with the same numbering for the 9 subjects included – except there is a gray oval on the back that says “1993 Pre-Production Sample”.  I bought a set of these cards on eBay quite a while ago.  This is quite a set – it had a lot of key names from the 1992 season.  It has Robin Yount, who had just reached the 3,000 hit plateau (no George Brett), NL MVP Barry Bonds, both Rookies of the Year (Eric Karros and Chuck Knoblauch), Donnie Baseball, Mark McGwire, young stars Frank Thomas and Ken Griffey, and veteran catcher Carlton Fisk.

There was also  a 9-card sheet issued as a preview of the set.  These cards were numbered “000” and don’t have 1992 statistics.  They also have a gray oval on the back, with wording “1993 Pre-Production Sample for General Look Only”.  This sheet has Griffey on it as well, and 8 different players from the promos above – Roberto Alomar, Bobby Bonilla, Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Dave Fleming, Pete Incaviglia, Spike Owen, and Larry Walker.  I bought this sheet on eBay recently.

For the 3rd year, Topps printed a card of the Golden Spikes winner for the November 1992 awards banquet of the US Baseball Federation – Phil Nevin was the ’92 recipient.  This card was again in the same design as the 1993 Topps set, but Nevin didn’t have a card in the base set; his ML debut wasn’t until 1995.  The back  says “commemorative card” and the date of the luncheon – November 17, 1992.

I couldn’t find a picture of this card.

Found one recently – thanks to Reader Joseph for pointing this out!

Found and purchased this card in December 2014!

Hi. Happened upon your page while looking for something almost totally unrelated. 🙂

In case you haven’t come across them yet, I stumbled upon a photo of the Golden Spikes cards.
