1991 Topps Pre-Production

15 10 2011

Topps came out with a couple promos to preview the design of its 1991 set to collectors.  The first was a 9-card sheet with stars from the previous season and the same design and photo as the cards they’d have for the regular set.  The sheet included Wade Boggs, Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens, Rickey Henderson, Bo Jackson, Kirt Manwaring, Willie Randolph, Benito Santiago and Walt Weiss.

The backs of the card have a large depiction of the 40th anniversary logo in blue.  I’ve seen individual cut cards of this sheet as well.

I don’t own this set, and this is the only picture I could find on the internet.  I want to buy the sheet or the individual cards, but the sheet is difficult to find and the individual cards seem priced higher than I’d like on the standard internet avenues.  So I’m playing the waiting game right now.

– UPDATE, I PICKED IT UP AT THE END OF 2012! –

Topps also printed a card for the 1990 awards banquet of the US Baseball Federation.  This card was actually a promo card for the MLB debut set.  The card usually has rough edges as it appears it was hand cut.

Cool. I didn’t even know those existed. I’d love to get my hands on some.
