I had a couple of more trades toward the middle/end of April (sorry it took so long to post on these guys!). This gets me up to 19 trades for the year – well on my way (and way ahead of pace) to get my goal of 30. Exciting stuff!
The first was from Tim from Great Sports Name Hall of Fame. Tim is in the process of moving from Indiana to Cincinnati, and the way his blog grabbed my attention was a post about card shops there. One shop he talked about was Maverick’s – a shop in Finneytown, which was the town one over from me (and also a high school we pretty much dominated in every sport – zing!!!).
Anyways, it brought back some memories for me. I used to get my parents to take me there. I learned a pretty good life lesson when I stole a Pete Rose card from there as an 8-year old. No clue why I did it. Who knows, 8-year olds do dumb stuff. But my dad found out and made me go back to the store and apologize to the store owner and I remember I had to say I understand if you don’t want me to come back. The owner accepted my apology – he’s a good guy and I hope he’s doing well. But – good job dad! With a kid on my way, I kind of understand his vantage point for things like that. When I got a little older and my friends and I still cared about cards, it was a long bike ride up the hill to get to Maverick’s. Probably 5 or 6 miles I’d guess. Sometimes in the summer, if we were feeling up for the challenge, we’d make our way up there to buy some packs.
OK, so enough reminiscing, what did this soon-to-be Cincinnatian send me? Some base Topps cards I needed, and some 1995 League Leaders cards to help me closer to that insert set! He also sent me a few random Reds cards for fun. Card #13 from 1989 Upper Deck, which gets me closer to finishing that set. It’s funny, when I got this card, I realized that I already had it – kind of. Not the version I needed – the one that I already have is actually a stamped buyback of the Sheffield rookie from 2009 UD. So I was glad to get one card (and a Sheff RC no less) closer to this set. Thanks for the trade Tim!
Moving from one Hoosier to another, I had a trade with Potch Wheeler, whose blog was going by Indiana Land the last time we traded. Potch sent me a bunch of stuff as well. There was some 2012:
And some 2011 & 2010 Topps cards:
And Potch also sent me over some random Reds cards as well. I particularly liked seeing some “old and new” 87′s in the same package:
